In 2077, a nuclear holocaust ended the war over resources, which is also roughly the time that Fallout 3 happened. 200 years after that, Fallout 4 took place. A region that includes Boston, Massachusetts and other parts of New England known as the Commonwealth is the setting for this post-apocalyptic retro- future. On October 23, 2077, bombs dropped and, unlike previous titles, the story for Fallout 4 began. It is in Vault 111 where the player’s character, voiced by either Brian T. Delaney or Courtenay Taylor, takes shelter with his family. 200 years later, they mysteriously awaken as the vault’s sole survivor and not ageing a day.
With both using a camera that can switch from first to third person view, Fallout 4 ’s gameplay is similar to that of Fallout 3. Supposedly, it features more captivating gameplay such as in-depth crafting system which uses every lootable item in the game, a dynamic dialogue system, base-building, split-piece armor system, and so much more. The immortal Dogmeat is back, together with other enemies such as ghouls, deathclaws, super-mutants, raiders, and rats.
Players are able to leave a conversation anytime, or roam anywhere on the map. With over 50 base guns, players can customize weapons. And with over 700 modifications available, players can craft them with a variety of modifications such as laser focus and barrel type. The Power Armor is re-designed to be less like an equip-able suit of armor, but more like a vehicle. By selecting separate types of armor for each part of the suit or by adding items such as a jetpack, it can also be modified according to the player’s whims. The ability to craft and deconstruct settlements and buildings is a new feature of the series. Some in-game objects and structures can be selected and used by players to build their own structures freely. Additionally, using a dynamic power line system, the towns can be powered with working electricity. Players must provide sustenance their towns, which can be inhabited by merchants and non-players, by building water spouts and growing food in makeshift patches. To defend against random attacks, players can build turrets, traps, and various defenses around their settlements. There’s even an Dweller’s Survivor Guide.
It was revealed during Bethesda’s E3 Conference, that the player will be a sole survivor of Vaut 111 in Boston. 200 years after the Great War, he seem to have emerged unscathed from what seems to be a suspended animation. Prior to the war era, the player is shown to have lived with a spouse and child.
A motif seen in previous installments of Fallout where the sole survivor wears a Vault 111 jumpsuit can be seen in this series. He appears to be carrying a laser musket, meets a dog and starts on a road that leads away from the camera.
The first place most people will encounter is Sanctuary Hills – the estate where the sole survivor is from and where Vault 111 is nearby. Codsworth, the player’s robot, still lives there. Based on the E3 reveal, it is possible that the player’s original home is one a player-built settlement site in Sanctuary Hills.
Lands outside of Boston’s city limits and mountains are also included in the setting.
V.A.T.S. and Pip-Boy
Real time action is slowed down when using V.A.T.S. in combat. Through percentage ratio, players can see the probability of hitting each body part of the enemy.
Players obtain a Pip-boy in the game. A Pip-boy is a computerized wristwatch that allows players to access a menu with data, maps, stats, and items. Game cartridges can also be found which players can play on the Pip-boy. The Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S.) gameplay feature makes a comeback, which, in combat, plays an important role. Real-time combat is slowed down while using V.A.T.S. In a computer graphics version of “bullet time”, action is played out from different camera angles. The actions of each combatant during a turn is limited by the cost of action points. To inflict specific injuries, specific body areas can be targeted for attacks. For example, for quick kills or blinding, head shots can be used; to slow enemies’ movements, legs can be targeted; or by shooting at their weapons, enemies can be disarmed. A percentage of hit chance is placed on each body part. Generally, the higher the percentage, the closer the player character is to an enemy.
Developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks, Fallout 4 is an upcoming action role-playing open world video game. The game will be released on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 10, 2015, with this expected system requirements. It is the fifth major installment in the Fallout series.
