Building in Fallout 4 will require work benches, which are rather easy to find as they are found all over the place. By using a work bench, a character gets into a construction mode allowing them to build structures near where their work benches are located. These structures can be simple houses or complex settlements.
To build, players will need to find raw materials. This can be done by looking around for scrap items or by demolishing buildings and gathering materials from there. What’s great about the building system is everything is in real time. Taking down a door or putting it back in again can be accomplished at the click of the mouse. Installing walls, windows, floor and decors are also in the same manner. The player can let his imagination run wild, put stuff up and take them down whenever he wants.
Not only that, players can also plant, install water supplies and power generators. The generator can be made functional with wires and switches, and even more complex with terminals.
With the power generators, you can also build turrets and other defenses that will protect your settlements. In case you would like to recruit more settler to your settlement, it’s necessary to create a radio power that need 1 power resource.
The simple house can be further expanded to multiple buildings. By doing so, traders and merchants will begin to visit which will allow for the start of commerce, and add more residents too, if they decide to stay and live in your settlement. When you have expanded your settlements into multiples, a Brahmin caravan can also be arranged to move in between localities.
Purpose of Building Settlements
Building settlements can serve a lot of purpose. Whether it’s to find a place to retire to at the end of the day, to create a fortress that will ensure safety of your loot from raiders, to sleep for HP recovering, to cook, craft, modify your weapon, or to allow for a place where to open up business, there are a lot of reasons why building settlements is a major part of the game.
Traders that travel far and wide will need a place to stop and take a rest. Your town will be a perfect place. With these merchants come the possibility of trading rare items. You’ll never know some of those might decide to stay and set up shop on your town, paving the way for economy to flourish.
How to Build Settlements
First you need to access the construction interface. To do that, open a Workshop Menu. It’s pretty much a part of crafting, where you also need to gather materials in order to actually build. These can be gathered from junk lying around the wasteland or by breaking up large items and using the smaller components to build a door, window, wall, or furnitures. You can expand your single building into a town of some sort, and have several towns later on where Brahmin caravans can travel to and fro.
How to Gather Materials
Materials will be required every time you need to build something. In the wasteland, there is plenty of bits and pieces that you can gather. Setting up your base can be made possible by picking up a dusty telephone, a dog-eared book, or even an advanced circuit board. While a player is on his adventure, he can gather these junks by hoarding as much of them as they can. These can be carried home, and as soon as they have a chance, they can start breaking them down into individual items. However, since a character will usually not have Superman-like strength, there is the risk of becoming overwhelmed by the stuff they have to carry. Everytime a character passes a workshop or another companion, they can also trade these pieces of scrap.
It is important to prioritize what need to be carried. Wood and steel are rather basic components and can be easily found anywhere even somewhere near your settlement. There really is no need to go far to find them. If you still have these pieces in storage, there really is no need to go out and find for more.
The ones you need to really look out for and make sure to bring home are the rare materials that you won’t find too often. These can be oil, gears, circuits, or adhesives. Spent oil cans will usually contain oil, telephones can give you gears, robots and broken computers can produce circuits, and find Wonderglue for adhesives.
There is also another way to obtain adhesives. If you already have an industrial sized water purifier, this can give you purified water. If you have a farm, you can harvest a variety of veggies from it – corn, mutfruit, and tato. Mix purified water and any of these veggies, cook, and you get vegetable starch, also known as DIY adhesive.
How to Manage Settlements
Managing your settlement can be done thru the settlement stats where it shows you the character of a town and its important stats:
- People – shows the population in a settlement. The more attractive and functional a town is, the more people there will be. And you need to build a radio tower to attract more people.
- Food – shows how much food is available. Be careful when the icon turns red as that means you are running low on food and you need to look for more food sources. Food could be obtained through planting various kinds of veggies and fruits.
- Water – shows how ample your water supply is. Place more water pumps and other water sources when color turns red.
- Power – shows how much electrical power you have. You will need this to run turrets, machineries, light, and so much more. Do not forget to attach a wire to those gadgets.
- Safety – shows how strong your defenses are. When the icon turns red, you will need to build more defensive structures or assign a settler in the guard post.
- Beds – shows how many beds are available for your residents to rest on.
- Happiness – shows how satisfied your settlers are. How manage the settlement as a whole will determine the happiness stat.
- Size – shows how soon or far will your town reach its population maximum.
How to Defend Settlements
Raiders are an imminent nuisance when it comes to settlements. To keep them away and protect your people, you will need to build defensive structures, traps, or guard posts with assigned settlers. These will usually require power to run so make sure that you have placed generators or power supplies nearby, connect them to switches, and install a terminal if you like, in order to make them functional.
